In Nnenna Okore’s native language, Igbo, Mbembe means shadow. In this video, Okore discusses her piece Mbembe and its commentary on indiscriminant waste in consumer societies. For Mbembe, Okore recycled and transformed used plastic bags into a large, hanging installation that emphasizes the pervasive presence and looming shadow of plastic bags in contemporary culture. Mbembe was featured in the Tang Museum exhibition Environment and Object - Recent African Art (2011). CREDITS | Producer/Camera/Editor: Vickie Riley. Interview: John Weber.
